A true gentleman, Denis Villeneuve.

Voters must have a hard time deciding Oscar nominations, because I think there are many good performances and extraordinary technical work in a given year. One of my favorite films in 2021 that actually brought me back to the cinema was Cruella where Emma Stone and Emma Thompson give these powerhouse portrayals that are fun to watch. My point is that I wish Oscars would not be afraid to recognize more popular movies, because they do often contain some amazing art. But I recognize there are only so many slots to fill. And inevitably there will be snubs, surprises and shocking disappointments.
Now that all being said, Denis Villeneuve's lack of a nomination for Best Director is really hard to comprehend even giving the Oscar voters the benefit of the doubt. I dont think there would have been 10 nominations for Dune on the film craft side without a bold leader to shape and harness that behind the scenes talent altogether. I certainly think Denis deserved the nomination as a visionary who took on a challenging project and succeeded beyond expectations over so many naysayers. Remember when Dune was supposed to be a big flop?! And this awards success for Dune in a friggin pandemic!!!
But let's be a little positive here. Because of how the Best Picture category is determined by preference voting, I think Dune could still surprise with a Best Picture win. I wouldnt bet money on it, but the race is far from settled. And I will be genuinely shocked if Dune fails to win Best Score, Editing, Cinematography, and Visual Effects. I'm particularly rooting for Dune in Adapted Screenplay, because that's one hell of a job the screenwriter AND Denis did to compress a notoriously dense book into a 2.5 hour movie part one screenplay that was supposedly unfilmable.
On the flip side, I think we may have to unfortunately wait until the 2024 Oscars to see Dune have a better opportunity to clean up with Best Picture, Best Director, and maybe a Best Acting nod to Timothee I'm just saying as a fan. The Oscars might be in a Lord of the Rings: Return of the King situation where the saga is rewarded at its conclusion. Of course, does that mean the Oscars may wait until 2027 to reward the Dune saga if Dune Part 3 is greenlit in 2023?! Dont remind me of my age then!!!
In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to supporting Dune at the Oscars this year. It's been quite a while since I had a dog in this fight. But even if Dune fails to win a single award it still means so much to me as a great movie that I love as entertainment and science fiction. And Go Timothee!!!
P.S. Upon further reflection after my initial post, the Oscars may not even make it to the mid-2020s if they cant find a way to make the show more interesting and juice up the ratings. I cant see the Oscars disappearing in the industry altogether, but their relevance to most mainstream moviegoers is a big question mark right now. I hope they find a path forward to reward art and still attract viewers.

^ Great assessment Anthony. It would be a miracle for Dune to win Best Picture, but I'm really hoping for Adapted Screenplay. Dune and Denis will fair better at the 2024 ceremony, maybe then the academy will mature in conscience and appreciate that some actors/actresses gave performances that are worthy of being nominated, and maybe even win.
The Oscars ain't going anywhere. It doesn't really have to appeal to "mainstream" audiences, especially if they continue to desire to be spoon-fed from the MCU films. I tweeted a question this past weekend asking for a non-film reviewer/critic person who saw Spiderman let me know if they also went to the theater to watch The Worst Person in the World.
As expected, no one replied. Both films received nominations, but Worst Person received two, and one is in Best Int'l Film, where Spiderman got a nom for visual effects, competing against Dune. So will the MCU fan tune in for that? I doubt it especially if the dude bruh who saw Spiderman 10x had no interest to watch Worst Person.

The Oscars doesn't have to appeal to a mainstream audience. I mean they can do what they want. But the Oscars should understand that if hardly any more mainstream films get nominated or win, then it wouldnt surprise me if ratings continue to decline so much that the network may not even air the ceremony. I dont want that to happen believe me. I treat the Oscars like the Superbowl which is a fun annual event to watch.
I think I've watched the Oscars every year since the 1990s when I was in grade school. But when you look at the films nominated in the 1990s and early 2000s, it was often a good mixture of smaller and larger films that were popular and made money. I'll never forget the Titanic year or the year it was Saving Private Ryan vs Shakespeare in Love, for example. Just having Dune nominated is a really good thing this year to bringing back some of that epic movie magic.
There will always be the Oscars as long as new movies get made. I just want them to continue to be special and not just one awards ceremony among many.

Sorry, I didn't give enough info. HBOMax replaced HBO GO on March, 8. I have it. And we can see Dune as of March, 8 on HBOMax. Though I got the Blue Ray, it's good to see it online, too.

With Dune possibly winning 5 of the 8 Oscars that WON'T be on LIVE Broadcast, it makes sense to have two stars from Dune give the damn awards out. This still makes me livid.
