Timothée TIFF Tips!
As a seasoned TIFF attendee, I'm happy to share with my fellow Timmy fans who are planning their TIFF trip (for many this is their first) to help you navigate the festival and make the most of your ability to see Timmy in Toronto. Please feel free to ask me a question and I'll try my best to answer it. Please understand that I don't want to deviate from the topic of the specific screenings of Beautiful Boy, so I cannot answer questions about what hotel he'll be staying at (I don't know, even if I did I wouldn't say), and the places he most likely will be hanging out will be limited to VIPs and have heavy security (stern dudes with big guns). So now that's out of the way, let me share with you how to navigate and position yourself at the three public screenings for Beautiful Boy.
7 September at 6:30 pm Roy Thomson Hall World Premiere Gala of Beautiful Boy
If you plan to attend this screening, it will be a glorious event. If you have tickets to attend the gala, you will be among the FIRST people to see Beautiful Boy in a star studded audience, and you'll be watching it with Timmy and his cast as they will be sitting in the audience too. At galas at RTH, the premiere begins with a fantastic red carpet appearance, almost similar to an Oscar red carpet. Over the years, TIFF has gone all out to make it an event for the red carpet segment of a really hot world premiere film, and Beautiful Boy starring Timothée Chalamet is going to generate a lot of publicity and large crowds of fans. If you have a ticket, I do not know how much visual access you'll have in watching the LIVE red carpet to be honest. Last I remember, the line to go inside is on the opposite side of the building away from the red carpet. And this is because as the red carpet begins, RTH starts letting people inside. However, once inside and you're at your seat, you will be able to watch the red carpet on the large screen in the auditorium. And it's an A+ production and you'll see Timmy on the red carpet and they will interview him and you'll have great visuals of the red carpet outside, while inside the auditorium.
Due to the reserved seating capacity of RTH for TIFF at approximately 2,200, that's a lot of people they have to let in, and you must be in your seat by a certain cut off time so that they can give the seats to the people standing in the RUSH line. If you're not inside the building by 6:10/6:15 (film starts at 6:30), you will lose your seat to a person in Rush line.
If you aren't able to get tickets through the sale, and if you're in the Rush line, you might have a chance to get inside starting around 6:15. It's cash only and at a slight discounted rate. Signs will be clearly marked as to where to stand for the Rush line - if ever in doubt about line logistics, just ask the TIFF volunteers in orange. I strongly suggest that if you plan to do Rush, it's ideal that you line up as soon as they allow you to line up for Rush tickets for Beautiful Boy. Most of the time, people in the Rush line can get in. But unfortunately, there are times when only a few or no one in the Rush line get in because everyone showed up and got their ticket scanned.
** In the past, the Galas at RTH did not have Q&As due to the logistics of the venue and because they have VIP parties immediately afterwards. Just before the screening begins, the cast will be introduced on stage, they may say a word or two, literally just that, and the screening will start. They will be seated in the first balcony level and watch the film with the audience. After it ends, they go to the private party on the lower levels of RTH, and they then prepare to go to the screening at The Elgin (see below) and arrive in time for the Q&A.
Just the Red Carpet at RTH?
If you don't plan to watch the world premiere at RTH, but want to watch the red carpet, you can do that. Please note that there will be a lot of people camped out for many, many hours in advance to get the best spot along the red carpet. This part sucks because it's usually large groups of people who just go to TIFF to watch celebrities along the red carpet to get autographs to sell and damned selfies, and these people don't go see the movies they just LINGER around the red carpet throughout the festival. REAL fans like us may be 8 people deep along the red carpet and may not be able to see much, so, just a heads up. Because this red carpet will be focused on Timmy, it's going to be even more chaotic. With this all said, you're better off being inside sitting in your comfy seat watching the red carpet on the screen.
Or, you can skip all that and go to the next screening...
7 September at 8:00 pm The Elgin Gala Screening of Beautiful Boy
If you have tickets for this screening, seats are reserved at The Elgin, so you don't have to waste time standing in line too long. Seating capacity at The Elgin is about 1,600. At this time, Beautiful Boy is nearing the ending of its screening at RTH. The announcer of the film will confirm a Q&A after this screening. When the film ends and after credits roll, TIFF production will be setting up the stage for the Q&A of the cast. The moderator will introduce the cast one by one, and the Q&A could take about 30 mins if it's a really engaging discussion. They may take questions from the audience. If you're bold enough to ask a question, keep it professional, interesting, and respectful. That is the best way to get a great response from the cast. I've seen way too many embarrassing and cringing questions asked, don't be that person that people will tweet about and mock.
If you don't attend either of these screenings, you can catch the final public screening at...
8 September at 10:45 am Ryerson regular screening of Beautiful Boy
Watching films at Ryerson has been my favorite in the past, and I'm eyeing this screening in particular. The ticket is $20 cheaper, and there's almost always a Q&A here, and this one is more accommodating for possible autographs too. The seating capacity is only 1,237, making it the smallest of the three venues. The cast will appear after the screening and have a hearty Q&A as well.
However, the downside of Ryerson is that for a regular priced ticket, the seating is general admission: first come, first seated. Unlike the Elgin, although you'll select your seat in advance, the seats available for your selection by time you can buy the ticket may not be all that great. But at Ryerson, based on the time you arrive to stand in line, you could hit the jackpot and be in the front row - prime real estate for pictures of the Q&A and getting a whiff of the shampoo fragrance coming off Timmy's hair. But, you'll be risking having a sore neck looking up to the screen to watch a two hour movie. Not as much fun as it may seem. Another seating warning about Ryerson is that select rows and seats will be reserved for VIP, so you will have to scramble around those rows. But other than that, it's my estimate that if you're one of the first 300 people in line, you'll have a great and stress free time in finding a seat. The longer it takes you to get inside, the more difficult it will be to find the perfect seat as you'll be desperate just to find an empty seat period as a flood of 1200 people flow into the auditorium quickly. As you go inside, TIFF volunteer ushers will try to guide you to the balcony, but, just focus on staying on the main floor, again, unless you're at the end of the line.
Since the film begins at 10:45, they will start letting people inside by 10:15. You may be wondering how soon should you start to line up. Well, if you're in line by 8:45, you'll be fine. But most definitely, there will be people starting to line up much sooner than that.
The Rush line for Ryerson for the first screening of that day, people will be lined up very early because this screening is usually the last screening of a Friday gala film, so if people lost out getting into the first two screenings, they will be desperate for this 3rd and final public screening.
I hope this information proves helpful in your plans to see Beautiful Boy and Timmy in Toronto. Members which festival ticket packs can start to redeem them this Saturday, the 26th through next Wednesday, and then public packet holders select their films, and then single tickets for members go on sale Sept 1st and then the public can buy single tickets on Sept 3rd.
Please post your questions here regarding logistics for these three screenings.
