With the talent capital associated with Dune, and the fact that Denis' films are nominated for Oscars and win (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), Dune is straight up expected to bring in some gold. This thread will monitor awards conversations for the 2020-21 Oscar season.

Dune is mentioned yet again in an article speculating about this year's Oscar race:

I think it's good for Dune to be in the (Oscar) news.

If this happens, there's no incentive for Dune to be released this year. It all depends on how severe the postponement will be.
This changes everything.

Dunes current release date depends too on the release of Tenet this summer. I saw that the studio wants 80 percent of theatres to be open by middle of July. If Tenet has to move from July, then Wonder Woman moves probably from August and you have a whole shift in the calendar once again into 2021. It does not surprise me that the Oscars may move also under these circumstances. But as you said when is the question. And when is a good 2021 date for Dune ... we can have a fun debate on that topic!
FYI. There is a lot of good news out in the world. San Fran is reporting 0 deaths from coronavirus in two days. Deaths and hospitalizations are down from their peaks in major cities. Vaccine development is looking good. Since we debated some issues together a few weeks ago, I think we are on the upswing but it is going to be slow. We are seeing how very hard it is to bring back an industry that is not meant for social distancing or masks ... hence the shift in dates for all events. The good news though... Hollywood will be back no doubt! I can't wait to return to theatres again!
