I'm not a fan of Wonka, but curious about this movie.

Timmy's contractually obligated to participate in the premieres and promotions for Dune, perhaps to a small degree for French Dispatch since that's an ensemble film. This is why the contract negotiations went on for so long. I'm sure they had to iron out details related to promotional obligations for his other films coming out this fall.

For anyone in the UK both films are on Netflix.
I can also recommend reading some Roald Dahl, they are kids books and therefore very short! He created characters that are not really like anything else. Might provide some extra background for how they tell the Wonka story.

I loved the original with Gene Wilder but didn't like the 1 with Johnny Depp at all. I hope the 1 with Timmy will be more like the original. Despite what others seem to think I think he was perfectly cast in it. Guess we'll see how it turns out though. lol

I just checked Netflix in the US and none are available. I don't have HBOMax. So looks like I can rent both of them on YouTube or Amazon Prime. I may watch the Wilder one on YT/Amazon Prime first, in the coming weeks. Will see.

I watched the Gene Wilder version last night. Not bad. Not exactly what I expected. I thought the Wonka character was more sinister. He had his moments but I thought he was still a likeable character. And lets face it, the 4 other kids were bratty as hell, LOL. Charlie was a good kid. There was definitely a moral to the story. So I imagine in Depp's version, he is more devious. I'll have to watch that one soon. But overall, I thought it was pretty good. Not spectacular but good.

I liked the original 1 with Gene Wilder better than the Johnny Depp version. That 1 was just too silly for me. I mean, they're both silly but for some reason it worked in the original but not in the Johnny Depp version. In my opinion anyway.

Victorian England plus musical plus Chalamet plus Wonka ... I'm sold!!! I'm skeptical only of whether an origin story was really needed for Wonka. But now that one has become inevitable, I hope the movie is a great origin story! Watch and see Cruella for how one can be done successfully... LOVED that film!
I like the description about Wonka seeing color in a dreary Industrial Revolution England. I hadn't eve conceived of that idea for Wonka, but now I am intrigued by the Dicksenian premise. Charles Dickens is my favorite author FYI.
I don't know if they will go down this route, but maybe the movie should begin black and white like the Wizard of Oz or Pleasantville. However as the story progresses, colors get introduced until they overwhelm the gray. Maybe my thinking is too derivative of what has been done before in filmmaking. However I think it could potentially work here.

Wonka has started filming today in the UK and Deadline has confirmed an all star British lineup to join Timmy. This is going to be GREAT!

Does Timothee ever go on vacation?! Poor man hardly gets much downtime right now. Although I'm looking forward to Wonka, I dont know if there is an appetite in the public for a prequel. My confidence in the project, however, is bolstered by a great cast and the fact that the director of Paddington is also directing this film. The Paddington movies are great. 2023 seems so far away right now!
