Now that the DVD and Bluray are out in stores (I bought mine!!!), people are sharing their favorite scenes of Dune online. One of my absolute favorites that I playback is the following one so close to the book:
This scene shows partially some key world building and how in 1000s of years certain humans like the Bene Gesserit have mastered higher forms of nonverbal communication. The movie here captures so well everything that is great about Timothee as an actor. His look, his stature, his eyes and facial expressions ... they reveal so much emotion and character history in just a few seconds. I especially love the facial shot of Paul at first feeling this new sensation from the pain box and maybe thinking I can deal with this. He almost smiles but then how quickly he becomes anguished and tortured before persevering and becoming resilient. And Jessica reciting the Litany of Fear at the same time ... GENIUS!!!

Perfectly said. I think this moment is when Denis realized he truly hired the best young actor to play Paul. Just brilliant. And to have lesser performances be recognized in this year's award race is offensive.

Thanks!!! I cant comment on a lot of other films this season just because I havent seen them to evaluate. But what upsets me so much about the awards season process is that oftentimes science fiction and superhero films get overlooked even though there are some damn amazing performances. I mean you couldnt give Robert Downey at least one nomination for playing Iron Man ... that character changed cinematic history!
With Dune, for example, how is Rebecca Ferguson not nominated for anything?! She is the key to making the story work and she does it so well. And I think Timothees performance was just so inspired too! If he had failed, the movie would fall apart. I take comfort from the fact though that a lot of praised awards movies are sometimes forgotten and lost to history except to hardcore film buffs. Something like Dune will resonate for years and be rewatched I bet. It is now a new classic.

The guilds and critics are numb to performances in sci-fi/fantasy due to snobbery, but to a lesser extent, I understand their avoiding superhero films because their very own nature is very corny and fun. The only actors to win Oscars in comic films were both Joker actors in the DCU, and that's because when it comes to the Batman realm, it's darker and more realistic than the Spiderman and Ironman universes, and there are real life Jokers in the world, look at the former POTUS, but I digress. Rebecca and Timmy gave outstanding performances in Dune, let's just hope they are remembered in Dune 2 when they really break the mold for their respective characters.

F*ck, no Oscar nom for Denis Villeneuve. Okay, actors and actresses don't have noms at Oscars, I get that, but shame on the Oscars because of the Best director category.

I'm so angry and fucking disgusted. I knew Jane was going to win this year. They are dying to allow another woman to win Best Director after years of even denying women being nominated in Director. I get this because I'm a woman who has noticed this over the decades. But to completely snub the one director who created the most beautiful and epic adventure film of the year, and the highest earner of the Best Pic nominations, and NOT receive a nomination, is sinister. This was a deliberate snub to make it easier to make history for Jane to win. I loved The Power of the Dog, but you don't dney a nomination to a worthy director to make it easier for another director to win.
