Well AMPAS finally sees things differently and want to create a new category for excellence in popular film that they have been too goddamn snobby in nominating in the first place. There are three other categories that benefit films that have been denied Best Picture nominations: Best Foreign film, Best Animation, and Best Documentary. These categories were created to give much needed breathing room for each niche to shine on their own. I'm very happy for this new category. As time passes, it will get even more exciting, and this is from someone who has been watching the Oscars since the late 80s and been engaged in Oscar online chatter since the late 90s.

I love Villeneuve and I think BR 2049 was completely robbed by Oscar this year. Mainstream critics just don't appreciate the beauty/spirit of hardcore sci-fi movies (or the books they are based on) which I don't see many film makers out there can capture as precisely as Villeneuve. Though Dune has a more vivid plot than BR or Arrival based on what I have read so far, the film might still look very artistic in the hands of Villeneuve, which may not align with whatever definition of "popular film" category the Oscar established in attempt to draw more audience. I think the category is set up for Disney or Marvel films, not for hardcore sci-fi films which can never be truely popular or critically acclaimed anyway. To put it more straightforwardly, if Dune turns out to be a brilliant film, which I'm very sanguine about, it probably still won't get nominated for best picture. If it gets nominated for achievement in popularity, it just means it underperforms in all of other important aspects. Either way I don't like it. I want Dune to get nominated for or even win best picture, not best achievement in popularity. It's the recoginition a good sci-fi film deserves. Anyway I'm very happy about Timmy's choice of this important project, working with a great director and playing a promising role that will give full display to his extensive range of talent. Maybe that's enough for me. You raise great points. I would fucking hate this new category if it's just for Marvel/Disney films. Besides conflict of interest, with Disney owned ABC broadcasting the Oscars and winning awards in this category would just be beyond disgusting and corrupt. Therefore, I think we need to wait and see what the guidelines are. Films such as Mission Impossible: Fallout (which I enjoyed more than Black Panther) has also been brought up as a nominee for this new category, so no Tealover, it won't be for superhero films, but all action oriented, sci-fi, horror, comedy films that are extremely popular and well made. Vileneuve kicked ass with BR2049, my favorite film along with CMBYN last year. If this category existed last year, BR2049 or Wonder Woman would have had to battle it out. But I do believe this new category will be for all popular films, not just disney and marvel. I already sense that if Black Panther wins this first award, it will be tainted because of the disney/marvel connection to the Oscars. I would be much more impressed if something else won first. But anyway, I do understand our 'elite' desires in wanting Dune to be rightfully nominated for BP in the future. But the fact of the matter is that now that this new category exist, all films like it will be nominated in this new category. No documentary, foreign language or animation has been nominated for BP in eons, why, because they have their own category.

Yes it totally depends on their criteria for popular films. If it turns out to be a catchall category which includes all the genres you mentioned, we might see a future where all sci-fi movies are stuffed in that category and won't be nominated for BP forever. Honestly I don't know whether it's a good thing or not because for me good movies are good movies, no matter what genres they are in. Supposedly if a sci-fi/action/horror/comedy movie exceeds a drama BP on many aspects, is it still not rightful for it to win the BP title? Well since they robbed BR2049 so blatantly and gave so much recognition to the f S- of Water (sorry to its fan) , I just don't believe they establish this new category for decent reasons. I'm highly suspicious about its motive. BR2049 and CMBYN were also the top 2 for me last year, the kinds of movies of a lifetime you know... I didn't give a shit about awards before I knew Timmy because there's just so much obvious politic shit going on there. I also don't think awards give full credit to his brilliance in acting, otherwise how do we explain he was completely unknown before CMBYN though his performance was as stellar as usual? The only reason that I care about his awards is because they can contribute to his position in HW, giving him more freedom and autonomy in choosing the projects he wants to take.

That looks amazing! Has anyone here read the book? Yes! I read all Dune books a decade ago (actually it's a long journey in the 2000s), so it's time to read them again. I think I need an English verson of the book filming by Villeneuve in order to learn the English expressions of the world of Dune. Villeneuve is one of my favourie director, and I think he is the only one who can visualize the world of Dune in a movie (maybe Rian Johnson too). Timmy's a perfect Paul (Sorry for catching up with all topics in this forum so slowly.)

I think it's a great idea to read the book again, especially since it's been at least 10 years. And reading the English version may give it a completely different feel and prep you for the movie. Have you seen the David Lynch version of Dune? I haven't seen it since the 90s, so I would be interested in watching it too, after I finish reading the book. Crikey, I'm on page 240 and I'm still in Book I.

Thanks I'm reading now, too (along with another 3-4 books, but I'm not in a hurry), just in Hungarian. It's hard to find English version of the book. In Hungary currently it's in short supply in English, and I couldn't order from US Amazon. Its partners don't deliver to Hungary. Never mind, I'm looking for another way... Probably from UK. Yes, I've seen the Lynch version. In my opinion it's horrible, I could watch once and never again. As far as I know, there's a lot of people who like that movie, so maybe my mistake. I've also seen the mini series from 2000. It was better, but nothing special. 240 pages are a good progress It's a long and complex story.

I wanted to buy the book in Italian because sci-fy is usually more difficult for me to read in another language, but my book shop doesn't have it and says it can't be ordered, so I just decided to get the English version. As you guys were saying, it will be better to learn the mythology and everything about the story in the terms that will be used in the movie.

There are so many subtle details in the reading that it must be read with deliberate and mindful purpose. It's too bad Dune isn't in Italian, but it's awesome you're so fluent in English that you can still tackle such a book.

I have finished book 1 (translated) recently and am about to enter book 2. It's not my favorite type of sci-fi but I was still left in awe after reading it. It appears the first movie will cover the half part of the book, and the second the remaining part, but I'm not sure whether book 2, Dune Messiah, will be included. Paul is an extremely complex character who evolves from one state to another in a radical way, which is very challenging to play and I don't think any other young actor have the juice to deliver it. There are also tons of details that are just impossible to be put in a movie, so I'm looking forward to Villeneuve's magic of pulling it off. BTW, Paul was 15 at the beginning and he was under 20 at the end of the book, so IDK why some Dune fans think he's too YOUNG for this role.

I've been very busy this month and slowing picking back up on reading the book. I'm finally into Book II, nearing page 360. I love it so far, but this is not, at least for me, a fast read. I'm being introduced into a whole brand new entire universe of symbolism, mysticism, interplanetary politics and ecology terminology that reading this is very demanding. So I'm not rushing it as I want to absorb and understand what is being written carefully so I can fully appreciate and understand this literary piece of art.
