Way back in July, I wrote this post. I know I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but hear me out. The 2018 San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) is going on right now (July 19-22) and with Timmy being thisclose to finalizing his deal to star and be the lead in the remaking of Dune, this is straight up SDCC promotion territory for the next 3-4 years!!! If my speculations are correct, the studio behind Dune could have a panel at SDCC as early as next year (to introduce the primary talent), or most definitely, at SDCC 2020, in which the first film should be out later that summer or fall, or later if it's heavy Oscar bait like the Lord of the Ring films and come out in November/early December 2020. I've never been to Comic Con but I've always wanted to go at least one time to check it out, and with Dune on my radar, what better time than now?
However, apparently it's a nightmare even for seasoned Comic Con attendees to get their tickets/badges, so if someone wants to attend, they really have to be ready to jump on it and attend. If you're like me and seriously want to be prepared to attend, you first have to register for a Comic Con Member ID, this is necessary in order to be able to buy tickets and a badge. The window to register and create a CC Member ID is only open for a certain amount of time, and it is open right now as I type this. It can close at any time, like within a month! So to get the ball rolling, go HERE to register a CC Member ID and wait for announcements about SDCC 2019 or SDCC 2020.

This thread will be updated regularly and house all information related to the anticipated attendance of the primary cast of Dune, including Timmy, possibly at Comic Con 2019, but most definitely in July 2020.
Ahhh, it seems like so long ago, but time moves fast and now it's just 4 1/2 months away from Comic Con's 50th anniversary event! My post above seems so prescient and I'm glad I was so on top of things for my benefit. I gave y'all a hint last year, so hopefully what I share here will help you for CC2020.
I have long wanted to attend Comic Con, but I couldn't justify the costs while I was still living in Michigan. Now that I'm just a 2 1/2 hours drive away, it's an event I don't want to miss. As soon as Timmy was announced to play Paul Atreides in Dune last summer, one of two things came to mind: Which film festival would be best to premiere the film at, and when will there be a Dune cast panel at Comic Con? The latter appears easier to answer because Dune is such a beloved and respected sci-fi/fantasy novel franchise that it's reasonable to presume that the film's cast can be in attendance to be introduced and do a Q&A panel at Comic Con in July, or save everything for the next Comic Con in July 2020, just mere months before the film is released on November 20th. The purpose of this Club Chalamet special post is to alert you and to provide info and advice about how to possibly attend Comic Con 2020 where Timmy will surely be in attendance. But first, you may be asking, which CC will Timmy actually be attending? I make the case for both dates.
July 2019: If Legendary/Warner Brothers is smart, which I know they are, they will use Comic Con 50 to whet everyone's appetite by introducing this ridiculously handsome and talented group of actors playing some of the coolest characters in sci-fi literary history as soon as possible. An appearance at CC50 would be a brilliant launch pad to establish the hype machine on a film that will be in two parts, cost a lot of money, and will need to lure in new fans along with its decades old loyal readers in order to ensure its box office success. The first film is to be released in Nov 2020, with the second film in theaters 12 months later in 2021. Comic Con has been used for many years by Marvel and DC Comics, and other studios, to introduce cast on projects that had yet to start production, or will be released soon. They used Comic Con to promote and market the cast and used the Comic Con appearance for early publicity for the film. This is basic Marketing 101, and Dune is no different. The caveat is that CC50 will take place in mid-July, while active principle filming will be taking place in Hungary and Jordan. However, filming begins in March, and surely by mid-July, enough filming will have been done to permit key cast members, including Timothée, to take a week off to fly to San Diego to attend CC50.
If there are no plans for Villenueve's Dune to make an appearance at Comic Con this year, Legendary and Warner Brothers will be missing a grand opportunity to kick start the promotion of this film at the highest profile, and most important convention that is devoted to films of Dune's genre. But I'm thinking Dune will be there in July in some capacity.
July 2020: With possibly no appearance, or a very small appearance in some form at CC50, all eggs will be in one basket for Legendary/Warner Brothers to rock it out at a July 2020 appearance at CC51 to introduce the cast, show a trailer (an extended one at that), have a Q&A, and an autograph session - all this just four measly months before it premieres in theaters in November. For a film of this caliber, with this cast, starring Timmy, with expectations and hopes for a strong box office, saving Dune for just this year's appearance would seem like an afterthought, and a last chance effort to rile up the fanbase. If Villenueve and gang do not attend CC2019, it's a grand missed opportunity to start the engine on the hype machine on a film that will be hard to embrace and understand for novice mover goers, IF they are inclined to go see it after only hearing about it in the summer of 2020. But if people know about the cast, director, and film in the summer of 2019, courtesy of awesome exposure at Comic Con, this will only fair well for the film in the long run. Ok, so now that I have set the stage for what I expect of Dune with Comic Cons 2019 and 2020, here's what you can do to prepare to be a part of Comic Con 2020, where as I stated above, Dune will definitely be in attendance. However, here's the sucky news: All badges for Comic Con 2019 are sold out! They have been sold out since November 2018. It's impossible to attend CC2019 without a badge, game over, don't waste time thinking about how you can attend, or if you can still go to San Diego with the hopes of getting in and seeing Timmy, it's not going to happen. However, you can set the wheels in motion to attend in July 2020, and here's how.
1. You must go to the Comic Con website (www.comic-con.org/cci/purchase-badges) to read up on the entire process about how to attend Comic Con.
Register for a Comic Con Member ID. This is important. You can't do anything with Comic Con without registering for a member ID first. If you have the slightest interest to attend Comic Con in 2020, after you finish reading all this, go register for a CC Member ID stat. The registration window can close at anytime, and once it's closed, you cannot create a member ID account and you will not be able to buy a badge via Comic Con to attend. You cannot buy a badge from any other option outside of Comic Con; you can't go to Craigslist or Stubhub to buy one. You have to be a member and verified to buy a badge during the two badge sales hosted by Comic Con. The two sales dates are several weeks apart. The first is for returning comic con members only. Those who attended the previous CC, will be invited to buy a badge for the next one in advance of new members or those who have attended before, but just not the most recent CC.
2. Once you have a member ID, since you will be a NEW member, you will be allowed to try to buy a badge at the second badge sale. In November, I was a new member and participated in the 'first time attendees' and general open sale. As luck would have it, I got a badge for Friday and Saturday. Most fans go on those two days because the most popular guest panels are in Hall H those days, but a great many attend all four days. And some people can only get one of the four dates or like a Thursday and Sunday only. 3. The badge sale is an emotionally trying experience that leaves thousands of fans devastated that they can't attend because they could not buy a badge. Hundreds of thousands of people, around the world, will be in the registration waiting room ready to buy a badge (approx 130K tickets per day are available for purchase)! Similar to buying a ticket to a hot concert via Ticketmaster, you will be placed into the waiting room at 9am PST (on a Saturday), simultaneously with everyone else. This makes it as fair as possible for everyone to buy a badge. Some are lucky and are randomly 'invited' to buy a badge almost immediately, while some, like me, get into the sales room 45 minutes in to the sale. Others, sadly, are still waiting after 2+ hours and as more time passes, the inventory of the days available to buy a badge decreases significantly. For example, it was around 9:45 am when I got into the sales room to BUY, and you have to be Johnny on the Spot and know what days you want to buy and have your credit card ready. I do not recommend doing this on your phone, it must be a laptop or desktop computer. When I got in, all four days, including the preview day, were available for me to purchase. But I only wanted Friday and Saturday ($66 each of those days), so I bought those two days easily, and got my confirmation immediately. For a first time buyer and on my first try, it was perfect and it worked out well for me. But there's no guarantee it will be that easy again as thousands upon thousands of people have tried to buy a badge for years and never got the chance.
On twitter, Comic Con quickly posted updates on which days were sold out. About 20 minutes after I bought my badges for Fri/Sat, both those days sold out, then the Thursday, then Wednesday preview day, and then Sunday sold out. I remember reading one tweet from a guy who had been trying for 5 straight years to get a badge, but no luck. Wow!
This information that I'm sharing with you is not all inclusive of the convoluted process to attend Comic Con, just cliff notes to get you started and informed on what you need to do. If you are seriously interested in attending Comic Con 2020 because of Dune, and you are a huge sci-fi/comic fan, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any specific questions, especially if it's strictly about Timothée attending the event. If you plan to go to Comic Con just for Timmy, that is not a good idea as it's expensive and there's no guarantee you'll be able to meet him (getting into Hall H for a Dune panel is an entirely different matter that needs a separate post). It's pretty much mandatory that you love the concept of Comic Con and be interested in all that it has to offer to better enjoy this huge pop culture event.
My attendance at my first Comic Con will be a test drive for CC2020, and I will surely share my experience with you here to help you prepare for next year's Comic Con. I'm so excited to finally be able to attend this year, with or without a Dune panel. So with that said, I hope this information has been useful to you, and if you have any questions, please post them below.

So today was the big day for the Hotel reservation REQUEST to be submitted and boy was it an adrenaline pumping moment. We were given notice just on Tuesday of this morning's reservation for Comic Con priced partner hotels in the downtown area, and at Mission Valley. Although I already got a hotel reservation last August, I entered this hotel reservation lottery so that I can try to get a hotel closer to the convention center, and at a lower price. I will be informed if I got my hotel selection on either April 16 for the first reservation roll out announcement, or on April 23rd.
This information I'm sharing with you is to hopefully assist you if you're going to try to attend Comic Con next year.

Although I already have a hotel booked for my Comic Con visit, it's not at the discounted CC hotel rate as it's not one of the CC hotels for the event. So the annual Hotel lottery system is a three-part dragged out shit show emotional mess that I'm participating in for the hopes to be able to save a precious $300+ bucks on my hotel stay. Last week on April 11th, as I posted above, I was able to submit my hotel request. The next phase is that On Peak, the hotel lottery system, would have two roll out dates, April 16th and April 23rd in which they would email the lucky attendees, the hotel that they won in the lottery. Unfortunately, I did not receive an email yesterday, so I have to wait and continue to cross my fingers until the 23rd to see if my name comes up as a recipient for one of the 8 hotels I requested a single bed/room.
I swear, I knew the prep for Comic Con was stressful, but this is ridiculous.

Oh man! Good luck! I am sure the event will be worth the preparation anxiety, but it is crazy the hoops you have to go through just to get a hotel room. Again, I appreciate your diary on the experience to learn the dos and don'ts.

Whew! Continuing to live up to the pro-stress drama that is rife with all things Comic Con, hotel confirmation emails came out 2 hours later than they did last week. JC! However, I got lucky. Got my 2nd choice hotel, 1/2 a mile closer to the convention center than at my previous non-CC rate hotel. Life is good!
