I loved CMBYN like everyone else, perhaps so much, that I'm content with just this one film. In my experience, sequels to well received and award winning films often don't live up to expectations and are just money grabs (see The Hobbit). I'm indifferent to the talk that there will be a sequel or two, I just can't get excited about it because I think the first film tells the story as it needed to be told. However, if there was a sequel, I would just want one and Elio and Oliver should marry by the end of that film; no and, ifs, or buts about it. It's a gay love story that doesn't need to be clouded over by het romances to drag out the gay angst. But that's just me. Anyhoo, what are your thoughts?

I'm really looking forward to a sequel because I believe in Andre and Luca and the whole amazing cast. This bunch of people know what ART is about. Even though the story of the sequel may not be as good as the first one, they will definitely not turn it into some cheap melodrama.
The movie of CMBYN is beautiful for an important reason which I believe is that it has a very sophisticated structure featuring a sublime theme/spirit governing and connecting all expressive elements, a trait very common in the greatest pieces of artwork and rare in mediocre works. To put simply, it's beautiful because it has a soul. If there would be a sequel, whether it will be as successful as the first one depends on whether this master-hand trait is inherited or not.
Both Andre and Luca are maestros in their respective fields. Andre tried to deliver in the book a lot of sincere messages that he thought important to tell readers, especially young people, for exemple encouraging them to appreciate and pursue pure and uncynical love, not killing your pain and your ability to give and love after suffering pain, and understanding your identity as an intricate concoction of memories and experiences (the San Clemente Syndrome, which was not kept in the movie), all of which are thoughtfully drawn from his long, experienced and enriched life, which I believe will provide foundation for another brilliant idea or meaning for the potential sequel. As for Luca, after watching A Bigger Splash and I am Love and listening to his multiple interviews, I have absolute confidence in his directing ability and philosophy. What's more important is that I can see his efforts to seek above-superficial meanings in movies, not just getting satisfied with stringing some intersting plots together, which I think really chimes with Andre's philosophy as well.
I am sanguine about a sequel mainly because I like and trust these two guys both as creators and human beings, and the amazing cast will undoubtedly pull off brilliant performance. Personally I don't care much about whether Elio and Oliver will get married or not, because it's just a plot which can change, dependent on what kind of story they want to tell.
Sorry for some possible confusing parts because English is not my first language.

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts tealover, you have a better appreciation of Luca's previous films and anticipate any possible sequel(s) to be warranted and much desired. We shall see. I'm in the minority in thinking that there might not be any sequels at all.

If there is a sequel, I want it very much to focus on their relationship and not on negativity/grittiness/disapproval, etc. That was what made CMBYN so unusual in the LGBT-films world and it would be disappointing if it fell back onto the same narratives.

If there is a sequel, it may fall into the height of the AIDS crisis, and you can't get grittier than that. Maybe the crisis will bring them together, permanently.

I think Lucas is pretty serious about the sequels, or at least he definitely sounded like it when I watched one his recent interviews. I agree with him that there is more to say about these characters, but I am also a little worried, because very rarely sequels of great movies work. But I want to trust Lucas and also André Aciman, who seems to be involved too. Anyway, I don't think it will happen bfore at least 2/3 years. One thing I don't want to see in the sequel is a relationship between Marzia and Elio. I'm not completely opposed to Elio having a relationship with a woman, I think it might make sense because he seems to be bisexual and in Oliver's absence I don't expect him to be alone, but I feel like Marzia/Elio got their good closure in CMBYN.

I agree Manuela, if there is a sequel, I don't want any sexy times between Elio and Marzia, it's just a distraction and more filler and drama to delay a hopefully inevitable relationship between Elio and Oliver.

I wouldn't mind a cmbyn two as long as they replaced Arnie Hammer. he about ruined the first movie for me as he looks too old for the part. in the Book Oliver is only supposed to be around 23-24, which would not had looked disturbing with Elio being 17. however, Hammer looks like a 40 year old man in the movie. and it was just very disturbing seeing him touching Timothee. I literally can't watch this movie again because of how uneasy Hammer makes me feel. I even had to look away at some of the scene's. Now before anyone want's to say I have a problem with a male to Male relationship. I'm Gay, so No I don't have a problem with it. However I do have a problem with it appearing as they are trying to condone a mature person with a minor person which is how it came across to me. I am sure if the director had hired an actor who looked more the age the Character of Oliver was supposed to have been, I wouldn't have had any issue with any aspect of the movie. I love Timothee as Elio, I loved his parent's and the actors who played them. But I just could not, and can not accept Hammer as Oliver....

The original cast for Oliver was Shia Lebouf. But he ruined his life at that time, so he was replaced with Armie. Shia would have been excellent Oliver, I'm so sorry about that.

Hello Teenca, And Thank You for the reply. That would had been awesome if Lebouf would had been oliver, he so would had more looked like how the character of Oliver should had looked. and yes it wouldn't had been so Creepy as Hammer made it.
