The pandemic has absolutely disrupted the film industry. When it was announced several weeks ago that the Dune crew will go back to Budapest to film "additional footage", NOT reshoots, which is different, it made me wonder if the new footage is a new ending for the Dune film, which will incorporate characters that have yet to be announced, namely Feyd Rautha, who was played by Sting in the Lynch version. The director of photography made a comment recently that Dune can essentially be a stand-alone film. His comments made people start to wonder if Dune will indeed be one film due to the unknown long term pandemic damage shooting an epic film like this may prove to be.
I trust Denis Villeneuve and if that's what they are doing - adding new scenes to close out the first book Dune - I will happily accept this. However, I hope that at some point in the future, Timmy is given the opportunity to reprise his role of Paul, especially for Dune Messiah, several years down the road.

I do hope Dune will get the Part2 someday.

I think by time Dune comes out, we'll know if there will be a Dune 2. The pandemic has changed all filming schedules and some films and tv productions have been flat out canceled due to Covid-19.

I think whether we get a Dune Part 2 is box office dependent but not necessarily pandemic dependent.
I can see Dune Part 1 moving into 2021 if America cant get its act together or a second wave of the virus sweeps the world this winter and forces theatres to close again. But even in Dune Part 1 comes out in 2021, I still think there is a great chance we get the second half of the book filmed if an audience comes out and enjoys the movie. I am optimistic the movie will do well in cinemas if we can get to a place where people are comfortable going out to them again. It looks like progress is also being made on the vaccine front so by God may the future be better than the present.
As an aside, I too would love to see Dune become a hit that we even see more books filmed. Paul Atreides has an interesting character arc that would be fun to see Timothee make his own in different movies.

I'm putting this here because this news is a major departure from the optimism shown by Warner Bros just a couple of weeks ago. After having its release date moved twice, Tenet has been put on indefinite release hold. And, this may have a bearing on Wonder Woman (Oct) and Dune (December).

With The French Dispatch removed from the 2020 release schedule, I fully expect to hear news about Dune being pushed back to December 2021, based on the developments by Disney for Star Wars and Avatar being moved from Dec 2021:
This leaves December 2021 the perfect time for Dune to be released. Why should it be the sacrificial lamb for a destroyed 2020 theatrical season and fail to recoup its production costs in an obliterated cinema landscape?
Stay tuned...

I figure Dune will be postponed. Things are going in the wrong direction in the US and I don't see movie theatre's opening for a long time (Broadway, UK theatre aren't opening until 2021). And even when they do, a lot won't go, including me. They have to get this under control in California before I will step foot in any theatre. It is so disappointing, but it is what it is. I can't imagine these big budget movies (Dune, Tenet) opening with only half or less capacity. I could see the diehard movie goers going but a lot of the casual movie goers won't go, so how will they recoup their costs. I keep hoping we turn a corner soon so maybe we get back to semi-normal in a few months. But I can't even try to predict this anymore.
Like you said Simone, Dune may push to Dec 2021. Gives me plenty more time to read the book, LOL!

Spiderman has moved to the Dec 17, 2021 date, so that week is no good for Dune. I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop, it'll come any minute now.

Can one of you wake me up when this nightmare is over ... like on election night when Joe Biden wins.
And yeah I fully expect Dune to move into 2021 ... but I will bet summer blockbuster season over another full year away. Hollywood entertainment is just not a social distance and/or mask activity. I'm praying the movie chains can hold on and survive into 2021.
I do think 2021 will be a lot better than 2020... look, all pandemics end. It was my foolish hope that we had advanced enough as Americans and humans that we could get through a pandemic in months rather than years. But history is repeating itself. There were mask fights in 1918 too. Go figure! Health care should be a major priority forevermore.

This year has been a nightmare and I just don't see an end to it anytime soon. I'm trying to put it in perspective as some people are going through hell with this virus or have lost loved ones. Some had covid and 2-3 months later, have not recovered and have potentially long-term health issues. It is absolutely frightening. I am fortunate I can work from home and have been for over 4 1/2 months now but I tell ya, I am ready to get back to the office but that won't be happening anytime soon.
We all need something to look forward to - the days all just blend together right now. But I don't see any big movies opening in 2020.
Some Americans just aren't taking it seriously. A bunch of selfish, whiny children. Plus Trump and the federal govt are hopeless. I keep hoping we can turn this around soon but the more I see of some people, the more pessimistic I get. We have Labor Day coming up soon, so will that be another spike? Just seems never-ending at this point.

1 year postponement is so long. But if it's necessary it'll the right thing to do. (sigh…)

Ok, I wanted to wait a few days to see if anything was going to change, but it appears that Tenet will open in key European and UK markets the week of August 26th, and then open in the US during Labor Day weekend of Sept 4th. This is good news as Warner Bros is surely looking at the calendar and don't want to push Tenet towards the end of the year, or worse, into 2021. To me, Tenet is the canary in the coal mine. It will be the test blockbuster film to open in our current pandemic world and if it's successful, I can see James Bond, and, Dune, keeping their current release dates of November 20th and December 18th respectively. Everything is hedging on the success of Tenet to do well, and I expect this film and Dune to be in theaters for several months just to be able to have the time and space to accommodate all who want to see the film multiple times and rake in as much money as they can during the exhibition window. I know for a fact that I plan to see all three of these films several times in the theater.

Interview with the Dune cast! I think it's with Stephen Colbert. Not sure when it's going to air though. 8/1/20: thanks for posting this Jenna, but DuneNews received a notice from Warner Brothers to remove the tweet. / Simone

I've been a fan of director Denis Villeneuve for years, and he gave a great interview today with the Shanghai Int'l Film Festival. He starts to talk about Timmy at the 15 mins and 20 seconds bit for a minute, he really loves and admires Timmy. Here is the link to the video, and below is the tweet thread of Denis' gushing comments about Timmy.
