I don't know why it has to be a whole year though. I mean, they couldn't have it at least come out in the 1st half of 2021? A whole year is SO far away. Totally sucks.

It really sucks and a lot of people are disappointed. So many factors came into play just within the past 72 hours. Covid-19 infections up in the UK and has remained of concern here in the states, that's why LA and NYC have kept their important markets closed. Then James Bond pushed to April 2021, killing any faith that Cineworld in the UK had for salvaging 4th quarter 2020, and then Regal theaters closed all US venues albeit temporarily. If Dune stayed on for Dec 18, 3K screens are now closed to it. Legendary and Warner Brothers had a decision to make. Expect Wonder Woman to be moved again by week's end.

I am certainly depressed by this unsurprising news, because Dune was THE Timothee Chalamet film I had been looking forward to the most these past few years. I am a science-fiction and fantasy fan so when I first heard Chalamet was starring in Dune I got really excited and the rest of my Timothee fandom is history.
Lets look at some silver linings about October 2021. The planet might be in a much better place politically and scientifically coronavirus wise by then so Dune will be coming out with much greater open movie theatres and audience attendance especially in America. And the first Dune movie needs to succeed financially so that Warner Brothers can greenlight sequels that we all want.
Plus from a marketing perspective, maybe there will be in-person movie premieres, interviews, and appearances with the cast by summer 2021 which could not have happened in 2020. Part of the fun of a big budget film is all the cool promotions that go along with it.
And if the world somehow gets healthier quicker thanks to a vaccine andor herd immunity, Warner Brothers can always move up the release date. October 2021 is a good placeholder for Dune at this time in a constantly fluid environment. I just pray movie theatres can all survive financially by October 2021.

Ok, we're still in a pandemic, and Warner Brothers cannot and does not want to keep pushing films into 2022 and 2023, so they are shifting all 17 of their 2021 films onto HBO Max AND in theaters. Dune, one of their biggest titles next year, will open in theaters on October 1st in theaters and on HBO Max (for one month only). By October of next year, people will still be in the process of getting vaccinated for Covid-19 and many people will not feel comfortable going to the theater in 2021. This is all temporary and not a long term business model. Just for 2021.

I think it's an exceptional strategy for 2021. We'll see whether that will work or not. Luckily, we have a choice. Nevermind, I am going to the theater to watch Dune!

It's a good temporary model for 2021 as the world will be slowly vaccinated throughout the year. I'm sure by October, theaters in LA will be open and most likely still at a reduced capacity, but I will see Dune in the theater opening weekend.

Warner Bros decision to stream Dune for the first 31 days does not sit well with Legendary. This is going to get messy.

Warner Brothers need to take Denis' veiled threat of not doing Dune part II if they continue on this course of releasing Dune on the same day in both theatrical released and on HBO Max. Meanwhile, this news has cheered me up.
