Maybe some of you will be interested in reading the entire Dune book series. This thread is for the books in general, for the time being without spoilers.
I read Dune circa when Timmy was born. Long time ago... And I read almost all the Dune books during the years. 3 of them (the last ones, Sisterhood of Dune, Mentats of Dune and Navigators of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson) is missing because they haven't been published in Hungarian yet. I think I'll read them in English somewhen in the future. Here is my collection, it's a quite sophisticated edition. I'm looking for a good picture of the series in English edition.

Wow Teenca, you're a serious, hard core fan of the Dune universe.
If I were inclined to read another book in this series, which one would you recommend? I'm not particularly interested in delving too deep into the series of books, but I'm up for reading another one or two.

Oh, yes, I'm fond of the Dune universe. You can imagine how glad I was when I learned the news about filming Dune with Timmy and Denis Villeneuve. Wow, what a day was that. I'm writing an adequate recommendation tomorrow. It's a very busy evening.

So, here is some recommandations of reading Dune books. If you plan reading of just 2-3 other books, the best option for you is to read the next 3 books, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune by F. Herbert. You can follow the story of the characters of Dune – Paul, Jessica, Alia, etc. – and the storyline about what is happening after Dune. Actually God Emperor of Dune doesn’t follow that storyline entirely, because it takes place in the distant future, but it connects to the previous books. You can read every single book separately, but in order of them, as every book has its own story within the storyline of the 3 books. The Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune by F. Herbert and Hunters of Dune, Sandworms of Dune by Brian Herbert and KJA is a quadrology (is this word exist?). FH couldn’t finish his Dune series, therefore his son and KJA finished it from Frank Herbert’s alleged notes about the ending. This quadrology has almost nothing to do with the initial story, though is part of the Dune world in the very far future. You know Dune series as it’s a history storytelling. Paul of Dune and The winds of Dune by BH and KJA are additional stories of Dune, take place before Dune and after Dune mixed in the two books. As a matter of course BH and KJA don’t write in the way than FH did. FH wrote his stories with a lot of philosophy, moral questions, in a very high quality way, etc. Neither his successors can do this. But it doesn’t mean they don’t write well, just differently, and in less sophisticated way. Their stories are more focused on events, adventure, actions, etc. I loved reading the Legends of Dune trilogy – The Butlerian Jihad, The Machine Crusade and The Battle of Corrin - by them. It takes place in the long past presenting the war against machines (you know “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.”), and the birth of the world that leads to Dune, for example the birth of the order of Bene Gesserit and the beginning of the feudal-like system of Dune. It’s not Frank Herbert-like, but very nailbiting. Prelude to Dune – House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Corrino - is about the events leading Dune, with the story of young Leto, Jessica, Duncan, and the others. I like this series, but not my favourite.

Thank you Teenca. I have seen references of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, so I had an interest to read at least one of those. I will try to read Messiah before the movie comes out though.

Oh, it's much shorter than Dune? Whew! LOL! Thanks for the heads up. I go on lunch walks to the local book store, I'll see if Messiah is there. They have Dune highlighted in the Sci-fi section under 'Read it before you see it'.

It would be cool if Dune the films are popular based on the first book we get some sequel movies based on the latter Frank Herbert books.

I appreciate the information on the book series. I definitely want to check out other novels once I have completed the first one. It seems to me that the first book is the gold standard and that while subsequent books may be good or great none rises to the status of "Dune." Accurate?

Great! I think it's high time to get my copy of Dune in English. Till then I'm reading the 8th book of The Expanse (another sci-fi series).
