I was getting very, very suspicious of how quiet Netflix has been about promoting The King. No teasers, no stills, no 20 second trailers. Nothing. And now, just after Brian's like yesterday, and Timmy using the Italian flag in his standard cryptic tweet, we now pretty much have confirmation that The King will have a prestigious world premiere at The Venice Film Festival, where I feel this is the BEST fall festival to premiere at.
The thing that people don't realize about Venice is that they give out acting award prizes too!
Remember this tweet from last year in regards to Beautiful Boy and TIFF/Canada?

I still want a teaser or trailer!!! But that's great news about the Venice premiere. I am happy for Timothee and the cast and crew. But damn, Europeans get to have all the fun this year with Timothee in Hungary and Italy. Because of Timothee, I am also learning how to speak emojis Haha!

I am very excited about this. I know films can skip the fall festivals but I feel if they are ready, it helps to at least go to one of them (unless it is a crappy movie, that probably doesn't help to get early bad reviews). Some films aren't made for festivals (like Dune) but The King always seemed like a festival film. So I am super excited and Venice is pretty prestigious. I do wonder why it wouldn't go to TIFF as well (they love Timmy and Robert). But maybe TIFF wanted it for its World Premiere but those involved in the film picked Venice, so TIFF said forget it then, ha ha.

The King still could screen at TIFF, but it will be a North American premiere there, not the World Premiere status that TIFF prefers. TIFF still has close to 200 films to announce over the next several weeks, so it's a possibility, but no guarantee. The King could skip Telluride and TIFF, and go to NYFF instead.

Do you guys remember last year when the president of Venice Film Festival made the comment that after screening Beautiful Boy, he thought it was a nice film, but not for their festival. Well, it's a better sign that they accepted The King this year. A VERY good sign.

Yep, it is possible. TIFF does like the big WP's, so maybe they could announce this later as an NA Premiere or it just skips TIFF. We'll see!

The King going to Venice is a great sign - gives me more confidence in it being a good/great movie.

This is my fave Shakespeare play (Henry iv. 1), made by a director I really like with some of my favourite actors. I'm back to just looking forward to this (as oppose to getting a bit nervous).

Me too! I think we were all a bit nervous with the lack of information. I'm back to being really excited about it again.

Today morning I had a busy and excited travel to work because of Timmy's tweet. And I'm waiting...

Hallelujah!
What do we make of the "out of competition" business? I know nothing of festival tactics and etiquette but can this be a compromise that Netflix made with Venice fest that it'll premiere out of comp there because it'll be in comp for tiff or LFF?
