It's official! Wonka reclaimed the #1 spot at the US box office! And Wonka has earned over $350 million worldwide. It will pass $400 million by the end of the first week of 2024. I'm so proud of Timmy and very happy for him and Paul King. Warner Brothers is going to greenlight at least 2 more Wonka films. You heard it here first!

I don't know if we will get two movies but certainly another one greenlit would be great and makes financial sense based on the boxoffice performance. WarnerBrothers has done some brilliant marketing and scheduling of its tentpoles recently. I say that with admiration as more of a Disney fan. There is definitely much more story to show how Wonka maybe became a little crazed, jaded, and/or cynical as he went into business. After all, he eventually becomes reclusive in his older age before Charlie and the Golden tickets.

Franchises work in 3s, so I reckon with Wonka earning over $500 million by the end of this week, Warner Brothers will greenlight a sequel in a couple of months, and naturally in time, a third film will be announced. This should be good news for fans, there's no way only one other film can connect the dots between Wonka and the Gene Wilder's version of Willy which is 25 years later.

You make a really astute point about franchises working in 3s. Did you see that Wonka crossed $500 million global? I think people just want a feel good movie this time of year. And Timothees Wonka is so charming. I think WarnerBrothers may have a perfect recipe here, because Wonka has made a profit over its budget and marketing costs. They would be foolish not to consider a sequel.
That being said, the next few years with Timothee as he turns 30 will be cool to watch. Denis Villeneuve may make Dune: Messiah his next project later this year or 2025, which will also consume Timothees time with any Wonka sequel. I'm so happy Timothee has both Dune and Wonka. I like independent small films too,but I go to movie theatres to often see big spectacle movies. Not that many actors can take credit for two franchise success stories in recent years!

Wonka box office news should be reported shortly as I write this. That's when we'll get an updated estimate on Wonka nearing or surpassing the $500 million milestone. Denis has mentioned that he needs time to decompress from his Dune projects, so when Dune Messiah is officially greenlighted by Legendary or Warner Brothers, this is several years down the road, possibly 5-6 years. Timmy should be in his early 30s when this project starts filming as he needs every year before then to have his face mature more as a man to accurately reflect the burden Paul/Muad'Dib experiences which leads to the events of Dune Messiah.

Because there are many films that I do try to see on the big screen every year, I rarely go to the theatre to watch a movie more than once. Dune: Part One is the most recent exception for me. On a cold winter's night, I decided to watch Wonka for a second time in the theatre and had just as enjoyable a experience as my first outing. At this point, I am probably mixing up Wonka and Timothee as the same person, but I don't care. His charms and charisma just melt your heart in Wonka. I enjoyed supporting Timothee again and now am ready for Dune: Part Two and the 10,000 year voyage to the future on Arrakis.

Wonka did it! It hit the $500 million worldwide mark, and it also made it into the Top 10 of 2023 box office list. Well done Timmy and Paul.

And while my two tickets account for .000007% of $500 billion, I am happy that my money went to support a worthwhile movie and actor. Wonka has attracted all sorts of fans. Even people with libertarian leanings are celebrating Wonka: reason.com/2024/01/12/wonka-fights-the-candy-cronies/"The box-office hit Wonka is a wild flight of imagination, but within the glamor and fantasy lies a hard truth: The mighty often manipulate government power to shut out competitors, stifling innovation and individual rights. The regulatory barriers manipulated by Willy Wonka's powerful rivals to stymie entrepreneurs are all too real...."

I'm surprised about that. Wonka is British, right?

I'm surprised about that. Wonka is British, right? Yes, Wonka is a British production and I'm very surprised that BAFTA was so damn indifferent to Wonka. Yet, it's another year and another let down by BAFTA.
